4 Myths about girls on 2 Wheels.... #MythBusters

1. "You are a girl who rides motorcycle. You must be a lesbian" -I hear that all the time. Just because I have a motorcycle, and have a  great group of girls to ride with, doesn't mean we are all lesbians, or anything more than friends. It is no different than a group of guys who ride together, travel together, and stay in hotels during a trip - whether motorcycles or snowmobiles - pretty sure no one ever thinks the same of a group of guys as they do girls. I am super fortunate and grateful for all the amazing ladies in my life that enjoy 2 wheels as much as I do.

2.  "That's a BIG bike for you" - Girls can handle horsepower just as well as guys. Yes, my bike is big (1750cc). No, it is not TOO big for me. I can pick it up after tipping it over. I can lean into corners until my pipes and floorboards scrape. I can do figure 8's with it. A well balanced bike means more than cc's in the world of having a big or small bike.

3. "You shouldn't be riding by yourself, it's dangerous!"-  I like riding solo as much as I do with my friends. Sometimes more, depending!  I ride all over the country by myself and am well aware safety and just think smart when riding, traveling, stopping, etc. I pay attention to my surroundings. I try not to turn down back roads that appear as though the area doesn't welcome visitors/tourists. You know the ones with  fifty "No TRESPASSING" signs per square foot, poorly constructed barbwire gates and fences, and 30 mile stares from the shadows as I ride by. I also try to pay attention to where I stop - though my insight has failed me a time or two in that area. I try not to stop at places that appear shady - whether its the people hanging around the area or the condition of the area itself, I am well aware of my surroundings. I pay attention to what is around me when I am off the bike too. I always have my phone in my pocket, charged.   And, I support the 2nd Amendment, if you know what I mean.  (No, I will not start a conversation, nor debate, about that).

4.  "What if the bike breaks down and you are by yourself?" I carry a tool kit, a tire repair kit, and have quite a bit of common sense in troubleshooting things that might happen with the bike. I have a SPOT GPS locator that can send a pre-programmed message to folks I want it to, in the event I am in trouble and need help - as long as I can see the sky, it will work. I also use it to check in - it sends a message to folks I program it to do so, and it sends my GPS coordinates with it. So I can send a "This is where I am" message or a "I am off the bike for the night" message or "Please send help to this location - something is wrong with the bike", and lastly, there is an SOS memo + one that goes directly to local 911 for emergencies. I also make sure to activate 'premium roadside assistance' on my bike insurance - so they will tow my bike to the nearest motorcycle dealer, vs a flat '50 miles' or other restricted options.

So there you have it! #MythBusters #RideLikeAGirl

  5. Great blog, enjoyed the read on your travels with a group of friends, and by yourself. An there're moment's you need to travel as a lone wolf to rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit. I also agree with your opinion on lesbians stereotypes, there's absolutely no difference when a group of guys ride together. I thought you clarified nicely. Peace!
